Howard County Pow-Wow

Takes place on July 24, 2010

Pow-Wow, an American Indian owned and operated company, will sponsor the 17th annual Howard County Pow-Wow/American Indian Show and Festival on July 24-25 at the Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friendship. The pow-wow is an opportunity for the public to interact with American Indian dancers, singers, drummers, artists and craftspersons. Also, this event is an attempt by Pow-Wow to educate the public about American Indians, past and present, through the arts.

Gates open at 11 a.m. on Saturday and the event will kick off with a parade of nations (grand entry) at noon. The public will be able to visit with, and purchase from, fine arts and craft vendors. Demonstrators will be at the event as well. A large contingent of Native American Dancers in regalia (American Indian outfits) will perform daily. A hoop dancer will perform daily as well.

Fun activities for children include pony rides, face painting and storytelling. Children and adults can learn about traditional folktales, drumming, instrument making, and other fun stuff.

Keith Colston (Tuscarora-Lumbee) of Baltimore will serve as MC. Members of the Haliwa-Saponi, Piscataway, Chickahominy, Rappahannock, Cherokee, Sioux, Iroquois, Lumbee, and Navajo are a few of the Tribes that will participate in this year’s event

The Aztec Dancers will make a special appearance at the Pow-Wow on Saturday and Sunday. They will perform their famous “fire dance” daily.

The public will be able to purchase some of the finest Native American crafts available. Items for sale include fine art turquoise jewelry, moccasins, beadwork, rugs, books, paintings and dreamcatchers to name a few.

Buffalo stew, Indian fry bread, Indian corn soup and buffalo burgers are just a few of the Native American food items that will be on sale at the event. American fare, such as hot dogs, pizza and hamburgers will be sold as well.

Daily admission to the pow-wow is as follows: Ages 3-12, $6; ages 13-up, $8.

This is a rain or shine event and in case of rain the event will be held in the main exhibition hall of the Fairgrounds.
